Practical Assessment

The Practical Assessment is a set of tasks that must be completed in an industry workplace, or in a simulated industry environment with conditions similar to that of a real workplace. To be assessed for this unit of competency, you must demonstrate your skills and knowledge to identify, assess and control safety risks in the workplace. The Practical Assessments in this workbook include: Case Study Assessment Includes detailed scenarios and simulated environments, providing all necessary information required to complete relevant tasks and activities. These are based on the simulated business, The Continent Hotel. Workplace Assessment A series of tasks assessing the candidate’s practical knowledge and skills relevant to the unit of competency. This includes the candidate completing workplace documents or similar as evidence of competent performance. Workplace Practical Observation A set of assessment tasks where the candidate must demonstrate practical skills relevant to the unit of competency. These skills are to be demonstrated while being observed by the assessor. IMPORTANT! All signatures/initials in your submissions, including yours, must be handwritten and dated. Submissions with signatures/initials must be scanned. The supervisor/observer who completes and signs your evidence submissions must provide their real name, contact number, and email address for your assessor’s reference.Should you encounter issue or concerns regarding your assessment, contact your assessor.

Case Study Assessment

Case Study Overview

This case study assessment requires you to access and use templates for identifying and assessing risks in the workplace. This assessment is divided into two tasks: Case Study: La BellissimaTask 1: Hazard Report FormTask 2: Risk Assessment Template This assessment includes detailed scenarios and simulated environments, providing all necessary information required to complete relevant tasks and activities, based on the simulated business, The Continent Hotel <https://thecontinenthotel.precisiongroup.com.au/> This will not require you to access a real workplace, however, some tasks to be completed are similar to those typically done in a real workplace.

Case Study: La Bellissima

Case Study 1

It is your first week as a kitchenhand at La Bellissima, the Italian restaurant at The Continent Hotel. One of your main duties include keeping the kitchen clean. La Bellissima’s kitchen has an island kitchen setup where the dishwashing station and the inventory storage sit together. While cleaning the benches, you notice the following: Oven cleaner container and detergent has been left off below the inventory shelves.Splatters of oil across the meal cooking station and the dishwashing station.  You learn from your induction that any hazard you find in the kitchen must be reported and actioned immediately. You report this to your supervisor. They ask you to complete the necessary forms. Complete the task on the page that follow.

Task 1: Hazard Report Form

STEPS TO TAKE:
Access the Hazard Report Form from The Continent Hotel. Hazard Report Form https://thecontinenthotel.precisiongroup.com.au/resources/forms-and-templates/work-health-and-safety/  Complete all sections in the form based on the workplace hazards found in the case study scenario. Use the additional information below to complete the form. For the purpose of this assessment, consider the following: Refer to the current date and time as to when you found the hazards.Refer to your assessor as your supervisor. They will complete all sections for the supervisor.Assume that you have taken immediate action to minimise or eliminate the hazards you found. Describe at least one action taken to control each hazard.Describe at least one further action required to prevent each of the risks from recurring.Submit the completed Hazard Report Form to your assessor.

Case Study 2

You learned that Carl, the kitchenhand from the closing shift, usually forgets to keep the cleaning agents in the proper storage. Carl has been reminded by his colleagues several times since last week to correctly store the cleaning agents and equipment before he closes the kitchen. You notice that there are no signages in the kitchen informing staff about this. However, staff are informed during induction which cabinets these cleaning agents and tools are to be kept after use. ***** It is a busy week at La Bellissima. Bulk of food items and other supplies are being delivered multiple times this week. You and other kitchenhands need to move around foods items and supplies in the storage to follow the ‘first-in, first-out’ policy of the restaurant. Staff are given rest breaks however the kitchen is currently understaffed due to some of them taking sick leave. Your arms and lower back feel sore in the last few days due to this repeated task. An upcoming long weekend and public holiday expects the same busyness in the restaurant. Complete the task on the page that follow.

Task 2: Risk Assessment Template

Access the Risk Assessment Template from The Continent Hotel. Risk Assessment Template https://thecontinenthotel.precisiongroup.com.au/resources/forms-and-templates/work-health-and-safety/  Complete the Risk Assessment Template based on the scenarios provided from the previous page: Identify the two hazards from the scenarios provided.Identify at least one associated risk that each identified hazard could cause in the workplace.Use the Likelihood scale from the risk assessment template. Identify the likelihood of the associated risk from occurring.Use the Consequence scale from the risk assessment template. Identify the consequence should the associated risk occur.Use the Risk Matrix from the risk assessment template to identify the level of risk if it occurs in the workplace. Briefly explain why.Identify the control measures currently done by the workplace to manage each risk.Based on your assessment, identify at least one further control required to manage the identified risk or harm. Refer to the most appropriate control measure following the hierarchy of controls. Identify one or more persons who should be responsible for implementing the further controls identified. Leave the Due Date and Date Completed columns blank. Submit the completed Risk Assessment Template to your assessor.
