There has been a significant growth in the use of engineered composites for various engineering applications because of their many advantages over traditional construction materials. In civil engineering and construction, their applications include all-composite bridges, repair systems, internal reinforcements, marine piles, railway sleepers, and modular prefabricated houses. In transport, marine, aerospace, industrial, and recreational applications, fibre composites are well accepted due to their lightweight, high- strength and high durability. Based on the topics covered in the course, in this assessment, you are required to identify, analyse and report the desirability of fibre composite materials in your area of discipline. This can be a new application, an alternative solution or a modification to the existing system. In order to avoid duplication, you need to have suggest at least two topics and get your design concept approved by 03 May 2023.

The case study report (12-page maximum) should then be submitted by 02 June 2023 which addresses the following:

1.   Introduction and background of CIV4803 Mechanics(50 marks)

This should include a brief introduction and background to the proposed concept, discussion on the problem with the existing system and/or the significance of the new fibre composite solution, and the advantages of your innovative solution compared to the existing products or systems.

2.   Concept and innovation (50 marks)

Describe the overall concept and the innovativeness of your proposed composites solution and new applications. A conceptual drawing should be provided.

3.   Strength and durability requirements (125 marks)

Discuss the design requirements (strength and serviceability) and durability consideration in the proposed concept including the type and appropriate forms of fibres, types of resin and fabrication process.

4.   Analysis and evaluation (150 marks)

A preliminary analysis and evaluation showing the suitability of the proposed system in terms of strength and stiffness based on the required application. This section should include the material and geometrical specifications of the proposed concept.

5.   Application, maintenance and other issues (100 marks)

Possible issues in the design, production and application should be discussed. These include the fundamental aspect for the attachment of the composite solution to the rest of the structure. Other issues that will limit the application including maintenance of the proposed composites solution should be presented. Recommendations to address these issues should be provided.

6.   References (25 marks)

All references should be cited appropriately within the text and provided in a list in accordance with the recommended USQ format.

Grading system:

0-20% – Information not stated, or not clear, or evident

21-40% – Very limited discussion and information poorly presented 41-60% – Incomplete information and limited discussion

61-80% – Contains significant discussion and information

81-100% – Complete information and extremely well discussion
