Assessment Task 2:

Complete the following activities:

Carefully read the following scenario.

You are the Administration Manager of a health resort and convention centre in the Blue Mountains, near Sydney. The resort, Blue Healer, is made up of five areas: catering, spa, meeting rooms accommodation, and administration. Each area has its own full-time manager. The kitchen is large enough to feed over 100 people three meals each day. There are two full-time kitchen staff, and the rest of the staff are hired on a casual basis to cater for functions and retreats. There is accommodation for 80 people in twin and double rooms. Surrounding hotels provide further accommodation when needed. The spa has two saunas, a steam room, three warm water spas, four massage rooms and two consultation rooms where naturopathic consultations and facial treatments are performed. The spa runs continuously, mostly due to locals visiting, whether a course is running or not. There is also an office where the accounts are done, and records kept. It is an open plan office with 5 staff workstations. Most staff prefer to work with their own laptops, connected to the larger computer screens. Much of Blue Healer’s administrative work is carried out in the office, but several staff work from home several days each week. There are four meeting rooms of various sizes, and these can be opened up to make one large room for functions such as weddings and courses. There is also a reception and administration area where computers and printers can be accessed. As Administration Manager, you are responsible for the office area as well as the meeting rooms. Blue Healer has recently adopted a Sustainability Policy and Procedures and each area manager has been requested to determine how these will impact their work team’s activities. The CEO has indicated that Blue Healer does not want to incur any additional costs in implementing the Sustainability Policy and Procedures. If any additional resources are necessary, management expects that an itemised budget will be submitted to them before resources are approved and allocated. Currently the organisation has the following issues and practices: There is older style florescent lighting throughout the building. These lights are often left on after the workday has finished, and the cleaners turn them off when they have finished with their work. There are no formal energy usage procedures for staff or signage to remind staff about these. The company does not have a policy for purchasing equipment and buys equipment when required; often purchasing whatever is on special at the time. There are two company vehicles. Both vehicles are now five years old and need to be upgraded. Staff buy stationary requirements on an ad hoc basis, often resulting in large stocks of items such as notepads and A grade printer paper.Kitchen waste is often thrown in the general refuse binThere is a waste bin and recycling bins, which are often used incorrectly. The office is cleaned once a week by contract cleaners who use regular cleaning products.
BSBSUS401 Implementing and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices
  1. Develop a Sustainability Improvement Report.
Review the following websites and take notes on sustainability targets that would be appropriate for the case study organisation. https://www.business.gov.au/risk-management/environmental-impact/environmental-management/environmental-legislation-licences-and-permits http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/services-and-advice/business/energy-and-materials-efficiency-for-business/resources-and-tools/life-cycle-management Conduct further research using the Internet or any other source of information to identify the company’s sustainability obligations and how these can be met. Using your research and analysis, develop a report on your area of Blue Healer to present at a senior management meeting. Your report should include the following: An introduction: state the purpose of the report and summarise the current organisational sustainability practices. Identify the environmental regulations that apply to the organisationDescribe, and analyse, procedures that would assess Blue Healer’s compliance with the environmental/ sustainability regulationsExplain at least five environmental and resource efficiency systems and procedures that could be relevant for the Blue Healer. Describe at least three benchmarks for environmental and resource sustainability that could be relevant to the organisation Outline at least three common environmental and energy efficiency issues within the industry in which Blue Healer operatesReview the case study information and document the current resource usage of your team members.Document your team’s work processes as set out in the case study information and identify at least three ways of reducing their environmental impact. Document the company’s current purchasing strategies as set out in the case study information. Analyse these and determine at least one way that each could be improved.Evaluate the company’s costing strategies and determine whether these can be changed to ensure that the company take sustainability into consideration.Discuss possible strategies for ensuring that resource efficiency continues to occur. Set efficiency targets for your team While conducting the research, be mindful that many organisations require external assistance in determining the best ways to improve their sustainability. Find, and document, at least two environmental specialists that could perform this task for Blue Healer. They should operate in the same state or territory as your RTO. Include their name, website address and a summary of the services they offer. Develop an action plan to show at least six actions that will be completed by your team over the upcoming 12 months. The action plan should show the priorities of actions as well as timelines and responsibilities. Use the Sustainability Improvement Report Template to guide your work.   Blue Healer Resort Report on Sustainability Improvement Introduction   The Blue Mountains, close to Sydney, are where you’ll find Blue Healer Resort. The four components of Blue Healers are administration, catering, spa, and meeting spaces. Each department has a full-time manager in charge. Policies and procedures relating to business sustainability aid in the effective use of resources already available. As a manager at Blue Healer Resort, it is my mission to address the resort’s sustainability problems, such as out-of-date lighting, a lack of established energy procedures, and a lack of equipment purchasing regulations, in the Sustainability Improvement Report. restrictions on the environment   An environmental regulation is any law, code, ordinance, regulation, mandate, or rule that is promulgated at the federal, state, or local levels and that deals with chemicals, hazardous materials, or toxic or harmful contaminants. The business’ environmental control measures how much of an effect is being produced on the environment and makes sure that all activities are carried out in accordance with environmental regulations. The Blue Healer resort must implement and abide by specific environmental rules since it is situated close to the Blue Mountains. Several environmental laws include:   Management water usage:  As a resort company, we should design a water management strategy, limit water consumption in the bathrooms, laundry, and swimming pools, and implement a water efficiency system in order to decrease water use. Management of wastage materials:  Hotels create a variety of garbage, including plastic, glass, metal, food waste, and so on. Before gathering for recycling, they should be segregated. To guarantee that waste is handled properly, waste material must be disposed of safely. Protection of natural vegetation:  The Blue Healer is situated in the Blue Mountains, which are filled of natural beauty and many plant, tree, and flower species that draw tourists. The appropriate environmental laws must be in place to safeguard this natural vegetation. Regulation compliance: Research: Numerous studies are accessible both online and offline. Many authors’ environmental compatibility studies can help blue healer in their decision-making towards environmental preservation. The development of a comprehension of current business trends in connection to sustainable business practices will also be aided by these study articles. Reports and metrics The presentation of different data and information that the blue healer could find valuable also depends heavily on metrics and reports. We may assess the entire quantity of energy used and compare it year over year or month over month by keeping track of all business processes and how much energy is used. If there is a large energy usage, many solutions could be used. employee poll Nobody is more familiar with the structure of the firm than the employees. The business will be able to learn about any issues with the resources used in Blue Healer by conducting an employee survey. To produce a meaningful, long-term report, a staff survey should be carried out each month. Audits: A corporate audit is a crucial target point for the company in the context of sustainability and the environment. The company’s whole business activities are investigated with the assistance of the business audit.     Efficiency system and procedure: The following efficiency system and procedure might be advantageous for the Blue Healer Resort Business: Compost bin: By using a compost bin, you may lessen pollutants in the environment, stop erosion of any type, and minimize pollution. Compost bins make it possible to repurpose leftover, potentially spoiled food. Process of recycling: When it comes to sustainable company operations, recycling is crucial. Recycling is the process of turning something that would otherwise be thrown away into something useful. One example of recycling is the breakdown of food waste. Internet Marketing: More and more businesses are using internet marketing as a marketing strategy to save different resources. Compared to other marketing strategies, internet marketing also has a wider audience. Organizational expenses like printing and ad agency fees are decreased when using the Internet as a marketing tool. Solar panels:  Solar panels are helpful for managing the blue healer’s electrical use. The green healer charges more since it offers a variety of pure electric services. Installing solar panels may help businesses reduce their high operating expenses. Businesses may achieve energy independence and reap financial and environmental benefits by installing solar panels.   Benchmarks: Setting environmental sustainability targets, increasing knowledge of environmental sustainability policies, developing follow-up programs, and ensuring successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Policy are key benchmarks for the sustainability of environmental resources. The following three challenges with regard to energy and the environment are typical for the sector in which blue healer operates: One of the three major environmental and energy efficiency issues for the sector in which blue healer works is the older style of fluorescent lighting used throughout the plant, which is routinely kept on after the workday has finished.   Neither a notice nor any precise energy usage recommendations are provided for workers.   There are recycling and garbage bins, both of which are routinely abused.   Current usage: The resources now used by my team include company vehicles, cleaning services provided by cleaners, the use of power, and meals prepared in the kitchen.   Area for improvement: Solar energy is being utilized to replace the demand for power as an alternate solution to problems with the office environment. After using, shut off the water faucet. Reusable items are reused, saving businesses money. Reusing programs are also implemented in businesses to ensure that resort garbage is not littering the environment. Sustainable transportation is also promoted to prevent smoke from being released into the air, which can have negative health effects. Purchasing strategies Measured equipment Team members Measurement Hours per day Energy consumption per month Electricity Appointed skilled employee for research It can be generated through electricity rapport 12 hr per day 30 times the day of its is used Water Appointed general employee for research Total expenses data can be used or report about waste utilization can prepared. 12 hr per day 30 times the day of its is used Garbage Appointed general employees for research Total expenses data can be used or report about waste utilization can be prepared 12 hr per day 30 times the day of its is used             Continuous improvement : Monitoring monthly total energy use as well as any other natural resource usage at the resort is one of the many approaches to ensure resource efficiency. It facilitates comparing the energy use of the business. Business plans must be prepared in a manner that helps the company accomplish its objectives. Targets The goal of the work group is to: • Install new trash cans that will speed up the decomposition process.   maximizing the utilization of solar energy while reducing energy consumption by 45%.   The recycling procedure and method will be enhanced by 50%.   Producing energy consumption audits and reports, as well as practical ways to reduce it.   Expert assistance :   The two relevant experts are listed as follows:   Tango Energy:  It is a leading provider of renewable energy in the nation and operates as Pacific Hydro Australia’s retail division. Thanks to a lot of happy clients, tango is becoming more and more popular across Australia. Due to its simple energy plans and good conscience, Tango energy is preferred by many customers. The URL of Tango Energy’s website is https://www.tangoenergy.com/.     Powerark Australia:  A well-known and reputable distributor of solar energy panels in Australia is Powerark Australia. The primary objective of the business is to provide customers with sustainable energy via premium solar goods built from the finest materials. The website’s URL is https://powerarksolar.com.au/.     Action Plan Activity Priority Responsible Timeline To collect all the necessary information and data through research and survey.
