The following task must be demonstrated in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the systems administration and support field of work, and include access to:
- Special purpose tools, equipment and materials.
- Industry software packages.
- Stand-alone or networked personal computers.
- Appropriate OS installation compact disk or recovery boot disks.
- Drivers for connected devices.
- Helpdesk system.
- OS service packs.
For this task you are to complete the following steps to install and upgrade operating systems on at least 2 different occasions for 2 different operating systems.
Complete the following steps on each occasion to determine the organisational help desk procedures:
- Obtain and review the organisation’s technical support procedures.
- Interrogate the help desk system to obtain the required information.
- Liaise with the client to determine the organisation’s OS requirements.
Install or upgrade a desktop OS on each occasion by performing the following steps:
- Install the OS.
- Update the existing OS.
- Research and implement the automated OS installation techniques and procedures.
- Migrate the files.
Manage and troubleshoot the resource access by completing the following steps:
- Configure the local resources access.
- Configure the sharing of local resources.
- Assign the access rights to the shared resources.
On each occasion, configure and troubleshoot the hardware devices and drivers:
- Determine any problems with hardware resources and resolve them.
- Research and install the appropriate device drivers.
- Configure the hardware resources.
- Configure the device drivers.
Configure and troubleshoot the desktop and the user environments on each occasion by completing the following steps:
- Construct profiles for each of the users.
- Organise the range of required shortcuts.
- Arrange the screen management options.
After each occasion of installing and upgrading operating systems, you will need to sit down with your assessor and discuss:
- The procedures and techniques involved in the installation and/or upgrading of the OS.
- The procedures and principals involved in an unattended OS installation.
- Any OS configuration issues that arose, and how they were resolved.
