Student Guide for Practical Assessment
Overview of AssessmentInstructions to include, but not limited to: Assessors will observe the student completing the service tasks.Students may work individually or in pairs depending on class size.Assessment is based on the Assessment Requirements (R1) of AURLTJ102 Remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes. At any time, students may refer to technical manuals and their learning guides or Textbooks for further information.If there is a clear breach of safety, assessors MUST intervene immediately and advise the student of the breach.Students MUST successfully remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes before competency can be achieved for the practical component. Observable behaviors and answers to oral questions MUST be recorded on this document.If reassessment is required, this must be done after further study and discussion with the student.
Task/s to be assessedThe tasks you will be observed undertaking are: The student MUST remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes for specific applications that safely and environmentally follows workplace procedures to meet required outcomes. This includes: Remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres to BOTH STEEL and ALLOY wheels, including repairs or replacements to: Two [2] tubes Two [2] radial ply tyres.
Oral questioningDuring the practical demonstration your assessor will ask you questions that will address the knowledge aspects of the unit of competency. You will respond orally, and your assessor will record your response. Topics will include: 1. Prepare to remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes 2. Remove and inspect tyres, tubes and wheels 3. Repair and refit tyres and tubes 4. Complete work processes
Time allowedOn average, the Assessment should take 2 – 4 hours to complete each Job Card.
LocationAssessment will take place in a simulated workshop environment relevant to the trade stream being studied.
Practical PracticeYou should have practiced these practical tasks and feel comfortable completing the tasks before attempting the practical assessment.
Decision making rulesTo achieve a satisfactory outcome, you MUST remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes on four [4] occasions in automotive service and repair workplace before competency can be achieved for the practical component, and answer all questions presented by the Assessor. Expected answers to oral questions are indicative of the correct answer. You MUST look for the following in this assessment task: –  The student MUST remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes for specific applications that safely and environmentally follows workplace procedures to meet required outcomes. This includes: Remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres to BOTH STEEL and ALLOY wheels, including repairs or replacements to: Two [2] tubes Two [2] radial ply tyres.
Performance Observation Criteria for Assessment TaskThe assessment methods MUST be by direct observation of tasks on required skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application. Your Assessor will observe you on the following observations: Obtain and read through job card to determine customer concern and discuss concern with customer of workplace supervisor.Access and understand the correct vehicle workshop manual, tyre manufacture, tube manufacture, tyre machine operating instructions and workplace procedures for removing, inspecting and repairing tyre and tubes, including safely deflating and inflating tyres and tube procedures.Observe all workplace safety requirements, wear correct PPE, completed job safety analysis (JSA) and identify any hazards with working around wheel and tyre assemblies such as; using compressed air and air operated workshop tools and equipment, manual handling of wheel and tyre assemblies, dangers of working with split or multi-piece wheel assemblies, deflating and inflating tyres and tube and managed risks by following procedures for using workplace tools, equipment and air operated tools, safely lifting wheel and tyres assemblies using lifting equipment and followed Workplace Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs).Select the correct tools, equipment and materials for removing, inspecting and repairing tyre and tubes such as; wheel and tyre lifting equipment, tyre gauge, tyre cage, buffing rasp, Remer, patch roller/stitcher, T-handle needle tool, Schrader valve core removing tool, wheel weight hammer, tyre crayon, tyre depth gauge, vulcanising cement fluid, cleaning solvent, plug patches, tyre repair patches, tyre valves, tyre changing machine, tyre iron levers, bead seat ring, tyre mounting paste or wax, dip tank and checked that the tools and equipment are safe to use.Follow the workplace safe work procedures, vehicle workshop manual, tyre manufacture workshop manual, tube manufacture workshop manual and tyre machine operating instructions, using the correct tools and equipment, such as; tyre changing machine, tyre iron levers, wheel weight hammer and Schrader valve core removing tool, safely deflated the tyre following the deflating and inflating tyres and tube procedures, mark the wheel weight and valve position on the tyre and safely removed the wheel weight, tyre and tubes from the wheel assembly.Follow the workplace safe work procedures, vehicle manufactures workshop manual and tyre manufacture workshop manual, inspected the condition of tyre, tube and wheel assembly for rim damage or cracks for hub mounting points wear and wheel nuts/lugs holes for damage, inspected the condition of tyre assembly for rapid wear at the centre or shoulders or damage like crack tread including for wear using tyre depth gauge and the tube for deterioration, and located the source of the leak, then reported findings and recommendations on the Job Card and to the customer or workplace supervisor.Use and follow workplace safe work procedures, vehicle manufactures workshop manual, tyre manufacture workshop manual, and tube manufacture workshop manual work out the best way to repair or replaced the tyre or tube, and repaired the tyre or tube using tools such as; buffing rasp, Remer, patch roller/stitcher, T-handle needle tool, and materials such as; vulcanising cement fluid, cleaning solvent, plug patches, tyre repair patches, tyre valves without causing damage to the environment by capping vulcanising cement fluid, and cleaning solvent bottles when not in use or replaced the tyre or tube.Follow the workplace safe work procedures, vehicle workshop manual, tyre manufacture workshop manual, tube manufacture workshop manual and tyre machine operating instructions, using the correct tools and equipment, such as; tyre changing machine, tyre iron levers, wheel weight hammer and Schrader valve core removing tool, safely installed the tyre and tube to the wheel assembly using the tyre machine and tyre mounting paste or wax and safely inflated the tyre to the correct tyre pressure following the deflating and inflating tyres and tube procedures using tyre gauge and tyre cage (if required) and refitted the wheel weight in the correct position without causing any damage wheel, tyre and equipment.Follow the workplace safe work procedures, vehicle workshop manual, tyre manufacture workshop manual, and tube manufacture workshop manual correctly check that the tyre and tube are fitted to wheel assembly and recheck tyre pressure.Carry out a final inspection of the customers wheel assembly to ensure that the repairs completed are to the workplace repair standards and the wheel assembly is ready to be given back to the customer.Clean the work area of any waste and disposed recyclable and non-recycle waste into correct waste or recycling bins.Complete and finalise the Job Card/Repair Order detailing the inspection and repair procedures.
Assessment conditionsCompetency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Assessment MUST include direct observation of tasks. Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals MUST provide evidence that links them to the light vehicle tyres and tubes that they have worked on, e.g., Repair orders. Assessors MUST verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application. Assessors of this unit MUST satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Results/Re-assessmentYour Assessor will grade as either S – Satisfactory or NS – Not Satisfactory for the assessment. In all cases your Assessor will provide you with feedback. Only when all assessment tasks have been graded as S – Satisfactory you will be deemed C – Competent in the final result of the unit of competency; if you do not satisfactorily complete all the assessment tasks you will be deemed NYC – Not Yet Competent.If the evidence is graded as NS – Not Satisfactory you will be required to re-submit the evidence. In this case, you will be provided with clear and constructive feedback based on the assessment decision so that they can improve your skills / knowledge prior to reassessment. Where a ‘NS – Not Satisfactory’ judgement is made, you will be given guidance on steps to take to improve your performance and provided the opportunity to resubmit evidence to demonstrate competence. The assessor will determine and discuss the reasons for NS – Not satisfactory on any of the criteria and will assess you through a different method of assessment e.g. verbal/oral questioning, problem solving exercises.
Reasonable AdjustmentAssessor may adjust assessment conditions (vehicles, tools, analysis required) to suit workplace objectives provided that the integrity of the task is maintained.

Upon completion of this task, you should be able to demonstrate how to remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes.

You MUST remove, inspect, repair or replace and refit a light vehicle RADIAL PLY TYRE to an ALLOY wheel.

Your Trainer/Assessor has setup the vehicle with a remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyre and tube fault. Your Trainer/Assessor will observe you against the performance observation criteria for remove, inspect, repair and refit light vehicle tyres and tubes.

Ask the Assessor to direct you to a tyre to work on.You MUST answer the Assessor’s verbal questionsYou MUST write the customer details, and vehicle details on the Job Card. You MUST write the customers concern (fault) on the front of the Job Card.You MUST complete an JSA (Job Safety Analysis) and attach it to this Job Card before commencing the Job Card. Make sure it’s safe to proceed. If not, You MUST discuss the safety concern with the Assessor before commencing.You MUST write the customers concern (job requirements) on the front of the Job Card. Your Assessor can be the customer (Role Play). You MUST diagnose the customers concern that requires you to inspect, repair or replace and refit a light vehicle tyres and tubes. (Your Assessor has setup the vehicle tyre and tube with a fault. Your Assessor MUST give you a fault (Customer Concern) to write on the Job Card).You MUST remove and inspect the nature of the fault or problem of the tyre or tube. You MUST report the faults or problems of the tyre or tube. The student MUST report their findings to the customer by filling in the Recommendations for the repair of the vehicle on the back of the Job Card. The customer can be the Assessor, record the conversation with the customer on the back of the Job Card.You MUST repair the tyre or tube as specified by the tire manufacturer.You MUST complete post service testing to confirm repairYou MUST clean-up work area, tools and equipment are stowed in their appropriate area You MUST finalise Job Card documentation by filling in the Customers Fault, the Cause of the Fault, the Rectification to repair the vehicle and the Parts used on the back of the Job Card.You MUST give this student Practical Job Card to your Assessor as evidence that you have completed the practical task and that the Assessor attached it the Assessor Direct Observation of Practical Demonstration Check list.
